For young autistic adults seeking independence, LifeWorks for Autism has been a game-changer. Since 2020, its Transition Academy has helped individuals develop essential life skills through structured, full-time learning — while requiring participants to live on-site in a supportive environment.
Now, LifeWorks is broadening its reach with “On The Go,” a new commuter-friendly program launching this fall. This expansion allows participants to experience the same structured learning environment without the requirement of on-campus living.
Designed for individuals ages 21 to 30 with a formal autism diagnosis, the program focuses on helping students build confidence and practical skills — everything from managing finances and cooking meals to scheduling doctor’s appointments and securing employment.
“The idea is that for five days a week, you get to experience what it’s like to have a full-time schedule,” said Hendrix Brakefield, LifeWorks Program Director. “We believe that transfers very well into full-time independence.”
LifeWorks’ impact is evident, with 90% of graduates securing employment — a rate significantly higher than the national average for autistic adults. Participants, like graduate Noah Thomas, credit the academy for transforming their confidence and ability to live independently.
While on-site residency provides unique advantages, Brakefield assures that “On The Go” students will still gain valuable skills and social connections. Scholarships and introductory rates are available, making this life-changing opportunity accessible to more individuals.
For those seeking independence, LifeWorks for Autism is proving that the right support can make all the difference. For more information or to apply, visit https://lifeworksforautism.org/.
