…these playgroups are more than a resource — they’re a lifeline, helping children and parents alike build connections and thrive.

Finding inclusive and welcoming activities for children with exceptional needs can be a challenge. For Sacramento mom Kristyn Traynor, it was difficult to find a playgroup where her nonverbal 3-year-old daughter, Bloom, who has autism, felt comfortable.

That changed when they joined a free playgroup designed specifically for neurodiverse children, hosted by the UC Davis MIND Institute in partnership with Sacramento Public Library, First 5 Sacramento, and La Familia Counseling Center.

The playgroups, tailored for children aged 0–5 with neurodevelopmental, physical, or other disabilities, provide a safe and inclusive space for kids to explore, connect, and simply be themselves. “Here, the kids can jump, run, and do what they want. She doesn’t look different — she just feels included,” Traynor shared.

Led by clinical psychologists like Dr. Melissa Mello, these sessions incorporate evidence-based frameworks that encourage play skills such as turn-taking and imitation, alongside sensory activities like water play and bubbles. “We’re creating a space where everyone is welcome, and your child is safe,” Mello explained.

The program also fosters community among parents. For Traynor, meeting others who understand her journey has been invaluable. “The moms share tips and resources — it’s been great having a community for Bloom,” she said.

Bloom, once hesitant, now eagerly anticipates the playgroups each week, her excitement clear even without words. For families like hers, these playgroups are more than a resource — they’re a lifeline, helping children and parents alike build connections and thrive. For more information, click here.
