Florida Atlantic University (FAU) has unveiled a groundbreaking new tool for families of children with autism
Florida Atlantic University (FAU) has unveiled a groundbreaking new tool for families of children with autism: a comprehensive Water Safety Guide designed to prevent drowning — the leading cause of death for children on the autism spectrum.
Children with autism are significantly more likely to wander or elope, often drawn to bodies of water due to sensory fascination. Tragically, this curiosity can lead to fatal outcomes if water safety precautions aren’t in place. The new FAU guide aims to change that by empowering parents, caregivers, and professionals with practical, autism-specific safety strategies.
The guide was developed by a team of researchers and clinicians from FAU’s Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. It includes best practices for home water safety, swimming lessons, emergency planning, and community engagement, all tailored to meet the unique needs of autistic individuals. Importantly, it provides guidance on how to communicate effectively with first responders and create personalized safety plans for each child.
By addressing the complex intersection of autism and water safety, FAU’s initiative fills a critical gap in public health resources. The guide is freely available and intended to be shared widely across schools, clinics, and households.
As summer approaches and families spend more time around pools, lakes, and beaches, this tool could save lives.
