This study underscores the importance of giving children with autism a voice in their therapy.

A recent study from the University of Missouri highlights the benefits of involving children with autism directly in their therapy planning. Traditionally, occupational therapy sessions focus on caregiver input, but Assistant Professor Melanie Tkach’s approach integrates children’s perspectives through telehealth coaching.

In these sessions, children set personal goals — such as remembering to bring their iPad to school or brushing their teeth before bedtime — and collaborate with caregivers to develop strategies. For instance, one child personalized the steps to tie her shoes, leading to independent success.

Tkach observed that this collaborative method not only helped children achieve their objectives but also fostered problem-solving skills and self-determination. The convenience of telehealth further enhanced the experience by providing a comfortable environment for both children and caregivers.

This study underscores the importance of giving children with autism a voice in their therapy, promoting autonomy and engagement in their developmental journey.
